CAMBRIDGE ACADEMY OF ORGAN STUDIES

Dates of course: July 27th to31st 2009. Tutors: Dr David Ponsford and Anne Page. The course began on Monday evening with dinner at Sidney Sussex College followed by a recital by Anne Page. It ended with the participants' concert followed by lunch on Friday. Subjects covered: in recognition of the anniversaries of Handel, Purcell and Mendelssohn we studied organ music in England from pre-Restoration to modern times. This was taken in a broader European context to include influential foreigners such as Handel, Haydn and Mendelssohn, who all enjoyed great popularity in England and who co-incidentally all have anniversary years in 2009. Students brought their own choice of repertoire for individual tuition. Suitable for: students of all ages and stages. - active participation was limited to 12 students and there were 3 observers Course format: individual tuition, master classes and opportunities for rehearsal on selected organs in Cambridge. Field trip to interesting historic instruments. Closing concert by participants. - the daily plan for two out of the three full days (Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday) was as follows: 9.30-12.30 morning class. 2-5.30pm lessons and practice. The remaining day consisted of visits to several instruments appropriate to the repertoire for the theme of the course. - after dinner session 8-9.30pm - Handel and the Organ an illustrated talk by Donald Burrows Residential accommodation was at Sidney Sussex College within walking distance of most of the instruments used for the course.
