The autumn CAOS study day will be on November 8th led by John Wellingham, renowned as a charismatic teacher and performer of early organ music. Entitled 'The Dancing Hand' the day will explore aspects of touch and articulation in early music with special emphasis on English repertoire.
THE DANCING HAND Expression through touch in early organ music. Programme for the day: 10.00am Registration. 10.30-1pm Trinity College Chapel. 1-2.30pm - Own arrangements for lunch. 2.30-4.30pm Clare College Chapel.
John Wellingham writes: `Listen with your fingers` My mission has been, and still is, to help organists to come to terms with playing a mechanical action organ In the morning at Trinity using both organs (the continuo organ and the Metzler) - there will be practical sessions for ALL to take part in to explore what the hand can do to make the music speak. I shall provide many examples from Scheidt, Bull & Bach and more. I would be grateful if participants could also prepare the following music: Verse Tomkins Faber Early Organ Series Vol.2 page 28 Voluntary in G major Op 7 no. IX Stanley Adagio from Voluntary in A minor Op.5 no.X Stanley Wo soll ich JSB BWV 646 (manual parts only) Erbarme dich mein JSB BWV 721 (manuals only version) work in progress not a concert performance. In the afternoon at Clare using the Snetzler organ.. Please bring music of your choice suitable for this single-manual historic organ with long compass.
This study day is primarily for playing participants of moderate to advanced level. A limited number of observers will be accepted. Open to players and observers. Cost £35 , Students £15 Please use the linked booking form
